About the event

Join us for an unforgettable Summer Science Experience as we embark on a journey to explore the fascinating worlds of molecules and insects!

This free event is open to rising 8th through 12th grade students!

We kick off our adventure at the Molecule Maker Lab Institute (MMLI) from 10:00am to 11:30am. At MMLI, we'll witness firsthand the cutting-edge innovations in molecular technology, driving efficiency in manufacturing and discovery processes. Prepare to be amazed as we delve into the world of frontier AI methods and gain insight into the small molecule making process.

After a stimulating morning at MMLI, we'll recharge with a delicious lunch at the renowned ISR Dining Hall from 11:45am to 12:45pm. Located just a short walk away, ISR Dining Hall boasts the title of the largest non-military dining hall in the U.S., offering a variety of culinary delights from its nine mini-restaurants. While some options may be limited during the summer, rest assured there will be options to keep everyone satisfied.

We'll continue our exploration at the INHS Insect Collection from 1:00pm to 2:00pm. Housing over 7 million prepared specimens, along with a diverse array of noninsect arthropods and other invertebrates, the INHS Insect Collection stands as one of the largest and oldest entomological collections in North America. Get ready to marvel at the wonders of the insect kingdom and gain insight into the intricate ecosystems they inhabit.

Students are invited to meet us at Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology ( 1206 W. Gregory Avenue, Urbana), for the start of our adventure and can be picked up at the Natural History Building (1301 W Green St, Urbana) at the end of the day. Please note that we'll be walking between locations, so be sure to wear comfortable shoes and dress appropriately for the weather.

This is a free event! The cost of meal tickets for lunch at ISR Dining Hall will graciously be covered by the UIUC Office of Public Engagement. So come along and immerse yourself in the wonders of science and nature on our Summer Science Experience! We can't wait to share this exciting journey with you.
